Ghost train stations left empty in Ayrshire as RMT strikes continue

Train stations across Ayrshire have been left empty for a second day this week as strike action continues.

Thousands of rail workers across the UK are taking part in a walkout as huge disruption hits train services.

Only five lines are being served across the whole of Scotland — with Ayrshire suffering a total blackout.

Vital cogs in the region's transport network such as Ayr, Kilmarnock and Irvine lay eerily quiet this morning as commuters were forced to look elsewhere for routes to work.

The normally bustling stations are among those badly impacted by the ongoing fallout.

RMT general secretary, Mick Lynch, has said disruption will continue until the union secures a deal that "delivers job security and a pay rise for our members that deals with the escalating cost-of-living crisis".

A third day of action is scheduled for Saturday and is set to bring more travel chaos.

Further walkouts are "extremely likely", warned Mr Lynch.

The union leader said that if workers could not secure a settlement or a guarantee of no compulsory redundancies they would return next week to consider further industrial action.

The RMT also accused Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, of "wrecking" negotiations — a claim branded a "total lie" by the government chief.

South Scotland Labour MSP, Colin Smyth, labelled the government's failure to engage with unions as “a disgrace”.

He said: "Absolutely no one wanted these strikes to go ahead, not the unions, not the staff and not the public but they could have been avoided.

"Instead of getting a grip of this crisis, the Tories are smugly sitting by while the country is dragged back to the 1980s.

"Rather than fix the mess they have created, desperate Tory ministers are spoiling for a fight to distract from their chaotic and discredited government."
