'Ghost of Yotei' Tourism Boom: PlayStation's Hit Game Is Bringing Fans to Hokkaido

The success of "Ghost of Yotei" has extended far beyond the gaming world. Since its release in 2025, the PlayStation exclusive has become a major driver of tourism in Hokkaido, Japan, inspiring fans to visit the real-world landscapes that served as the game's backdrop.

The Sucker Punch-developed title follows the revenge-driven journey of protagonist Atsu through 17th-century Japan. The game quickly became one of PlayStation's biggest launches, selling more than 3.3 million copies within 32 days and outperforming the launch sales of Ghost of Tsushima.

Its stunning recreation of Hokkaido has encouraged thousands of players to experience the region in person.

Hokkaido Towns Turn Gaming Success Into Tourism

Communities surrounding Mount Yotei are embracing the game's popularity by launching tourism initiatives aimed at "Ghost of Yotei" fans.

Seven municipalities near the iconic mountain have partnered with an intellectual property collaboration company to create officially inspired visitor experiences.

Rather than producing mass-market merchandise, local organizers are focusing on handcrafted souvenirs made from Hokkaido timber. The initiative highlights regional craftsmanship while giving visitors exclusive keepsakes tied to the game's setting.

The town of Niseko is also exploring guided tours that take visitors to scenic locations resembling those featured throughout "Ghost of Yotei."

These experiences are designed to showcase Hokkaido's natural beauty while introducing travelers to the area's history and culture.

'Ghost of Tsushima' Set the Stage

According to GameRant, this is not the first time a Sucker Punch game has boosted tourism in Japan.

Following the release of "Ghost of Tsushima" in 2020, Tsushima Island experienced a significant increase in visitors. Fans traveled to the island to explore the real locations that inspired the award-winning game.

The game's impact extended beyond tourism. Players raised approximately $260,000 to help restore the historic Watatsumi Shrine after it sustained damage.

The fundraising campaign demonstrated the strong connection players formed with Japan's history and cultural heritage through the game.

Former Sucker Punch co-founder Brian Fleming later visited the restored shrine, expressing gratitude for the community's support and acknowledging that the studio never expected the game to inspire such meaningful real-world contributions.

What Is Next for the Ghost Series?

Sucker Punch released the final major content update for "Ghost of Yotei" in March 2026, including a new Ghost of Yotei: Legends multiplayer raid. Since then, the studio has remained quiet about its next project.

Because Sucker Punch typically develops one major title at a time, fans continue to speculate whether another Ghost game is in development or if the studio will introduce an entirely new franchise.

In other news, Ubisoft's "Assassin's Creed Shadows" received a different welcome from the Japanese. According to a previous report, the in-game version of the Itate Hyozu Shrine was too much of a representation.

The officials later requested its removal from the game.
