Ghana's Ministry of Health has declared a yellow fever outbreak in its Upper West Region after laboratory testing confirmed three cases, all of which were fatal. The ministry's declaration was dated October 8, and Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh briefed reporters on October 9, according to the Ghana News Agency. The Ghana Health Service is preparing a mass vaccination campaign in the affected districts for people aged 9 months to 60 years.
The outbreak matters most to U.S. travelers heading to Ghana, including families visiting relatives there. Ghana already requires proof of yellow fever vaccination from every traveler 9 months or older, including people only passing through, according to the U.S. State Department.
