Germany turned apartment balconies into tiny solar power plants with 550,000 systems

More than 550,000 small solar systems had been recorded across Germany by 2024, and many of them were not sitting on rooftops. They were attached to apartment balconies. The systems, known as Balkonkraftwerk, allow renters to generate some electricity without owning a house or carrying out a major installation. A basic setup can cost around €500 and usually consists of one or two panels connected to a plug-in microinverter. As Germany simplified registration rules and strengthened protections for tenants, balcony solar moved from a niche experiment into a growing household technology, giving apartment residents a simple way to make use of available sunlight.
