German Proverb of the Day: “One should not praise the day before...” A timeless lesson on patience and uncertainty

German Proverb of the Day:“Man soll den Tag nicht vor dem Abend loben” is a well-established German proverb that literally translates as “One should not praise the day before the evening.” The saying warns against celebrating success or assuming that an apparently favourable situation will necessarily end well before the final outcome is known. It is a reminder that circumstances can change and that an early advantage does not always guarantee a successful conclusion. The exact wording is notably associated with Friedrich Schiller’s drama Wallensteins Tod , although Schiller presents it as an old saying rather than claiming it as his own. The underlying idea is much older and has parallels in biblical wisdom literature, including Proverbs 27:1, which similarly cautions against being too confident about what the future will bring.
