A German Navy frigate, the Hessen, has set sail towards the Red Sea with the objective of participating in a European Union (EU) mission aimed at defending cargo ships from attacks by Yemen's Houthi rebels. The rebels, backed by Iran, have been conducting drone and missile attacks on commercial ships, thereby disrupting trade in the region. The Hessen, carrying approximately 240 servicepeople, departed from the North Sea port of Wilhelmshaven, and is expected to arrive in the Red Sea once the EU mission is officially approved and the German parliament grants a mandate for its participation.
The EU foreign ministers are anticipated to approve the Red Sea mission on February 19th. Several EU countries have already expressed their willingness to provide ships or planes for this mission. The main goal is to protect crucial shipping routes between Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, which have been seriously affected by the Houthi attacks. While these assaults initially arose in response to Israel's offensive against Hamas in Gaza, the Houthi rebels have since targeted vessels with minimal or no apparent connection to Israel, further exacerbating the disruption of global trade.
In response to the attacks, the United States and the United Kingdom have conducted strikes on Houthi targets to degrade their missile-launching capabilities. However, the EU mission, codenamed Aspides (Greek for 'shield'), will not engage in any military strikes. Instead, it will solely focus on operating at sea to defend international shipping. The mission's intent is to safeguard cargo ships passing through the Red Sea and ensure the smooth flow of trade while avoiding any escalation of the conflict.
By participating in this EU mission, Germany aims to contribute to the protection of vital trade routes and to help ease the tensions caused by the Houthi attacks.
