Geraldine Brooks met her husband, Tony Horwitz, at journalism school in New York. It was 1982, they were both in their 20s. In the years that followed, they shared an award for their coverage of the Gulf War, and later, the shared two sons. He won a Pulitzer for his reporting; she for her debut novel. Brooks grew up in Sydney and from time to time they’d move back, but ended up mostly on Martha’s Vineyard, each writing their books.
“We were romantic partners and business partners and colleagues,” she says. “We were the whole nine yards.”
