Georgia's football team has made the decision to dismiss wide receiver Rara Thomas after his arrest on charges of cruelty to children and battery. The junior player was informed of the decision by Coach Kirby Smart before the team's practice on Thursday.
Thomas was arrested on felony charges of cruelty to children and misdemeanor battery charges, leading to his indefinite suspension last Friday. Following a meeting with Coach Smart on Tuesday, Thomas was officially removed from the team, with the coach expressing well wishes for his future endeavors.
Thomas, who had 23 catches for 383 yards and one touchdown last season, was considered one of the team's key returning targets for quarterback Carson Beck. However, this is not the first time Thomas has faced legal issues, as he was previously arrested in 2023 on charges of false imprisonment and family violence battery.
Georgia, a favorite to win the Southeastern Conference, will now have to adjust its lineup with the loss of Thomas. Despite having several preseason first-team All-SEC picks, including Beck and other key players, the team will need to find additional contributors in the wide receiver position.
Coach Smart also addressed driving offenses among players, with 24 driving-related violations reported, including a tragic incident in January 2023 that claimed the lives of two individuals associated with the team. The Bulldogs are set to open their season against Clemson on August 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
