Georgia Sued by Local Election Board for Inviting Pro-Trump 'Election Deniers' to Monitor Voting

The Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections has sued the state board for insisting that "election deniers" supporting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump be present to monitor elections.

Fulton County, the largest Democrat-leaning county in the state, has been subject to calls for election monitors from the Trump-allied Georgia State Election Board.

The county appointed Ryan Germany, former general counsel for Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, to lead a monitoring team overseeing the election within the county. However, the state board still wanted to add so-called election deniers to Germany's team after disagreeing with Raffsperger's handling of the 2020 election outcome.

"We are preparing for the observation of in person voting and two, we are observing the pre-election process," Ryan Germany said.

The Fulton County Board of Registration and Elections sued the board on Monday, which had no knowledge of the lawsuit until after it was filed, reported WAGA-TV.

"The State Election Board has no statutory authority to force the Fulton County BRE [Board of Registration and Elections] to accept, and Fulton County to pay for, election monitors hand-picked by the State Election Board," the lawsuit states, according to CNN.

"We can discuss how we got here, or will we discuss the merits of the lawsuit?" asked Republican board member Julie Adams.

On Tuesday, the Republican-majority State Election Board repeated its efforts, voting to suggest a monitoring team be present in Fulton County just a month ahead of the election, despite having no authority to install such monitors within the county.

Early voting in Fulton County begins on Tuesday in all 177 of the county's voting sites.
