Georgia Stanway joined Manchester City at the age of 16 and continued at the club for nearly eight years. She won seven domestic trophies, including the WSL title in 2016 and in January 2022, she overtook Nikita Parris' City goal-scoring record, setting a new one at 67 goals in 186 appearances.
Last year City finished third, behind champions Chelsea and runners-up Arsenal when Stanway decided to move to Germany to Bayern Munich who had finished just four points behind leaders Wolfsburg in the Frauen-Bundesliga.
She put pen to paper with Bayern before the Lionesses' home Euros spectacle, facing some of her new teammates in the final at Wembley.
Making the move to Bayern Munich came at the right time for the 23-year old and she told the BBC: “I think the reason that I did so well at the Euros was because I'd already signed for Bayern - I was just free.
"Now I just want to show the player that I am, and the player I know I can be.
"I was at City for seven, nearly eight years, from the age of 16 to 23. I'd played nearly 200 games, won seven trophies and left as the club's all-time leading goalscorer. But I felt like for the last 18 months I had plateaued.
"I was being asked to fill in different positions, like at left-back. And while I'm happy to do a job, I didn't feel like I was getting any better or going anywhere.
"They [Manchester City] offered me a contract very, very late and it wasn't the way I wanted it to end. So I just questioned myself and thought: 'Well, if not now then when? When is the right time to go abroad? When is the right time to take the next step?'”
Bayern will face last year's Champions League runners-up Barcelona in the group stages, on November 24 at the Nou Camp. Stanway will encounter her former City teammates Lucy Bronze and Keira Walsh who also made the jump to European football this summer.
Stanway said: “It'll be strange with Keira - the only good thing is that I'll be a little deeper and she'll be a little deeper. Because if I was higher, I'm sure we'd have a few little moments of laughter in the game."
