Georgia Republicans are gearing up for two congressional nominations in Tuesday's runoffs. In one district, a former Donald Trump aide is vying for an open seat, while in another district, a man convicted for illegal activities inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, is running. Democrats are also selecting their candidate to challenge Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene in the upcoming general election. Additionally, both parties are finalizing nominees in eight state legislative runoffs where no candidate secured a majority in the May 21 primaries.
2nd District Race
In the 2nd Congressional District, Republican Chuck Hand and Wayne Johnson are competing to challenge Democratic incumbent Rep. Sanford Bishop. Hand, who made headlines by walking out of a televised debate, was sentenced for his involvement in the Jan. 6 insurrection. Both candidates are focused on attracting new GOP voters in a district where Bishop previously secured 55% of the vote.
3rd District Race
In the 3rd District, Republican Brian Jack and former state Senate Majority Leader Mike Dugan are contending to succeed Rep. Drew Ferguson. Jack, endorsed by former President Trump, emphasizes his Washington experience, while Dugan highlights his Georgia values. The winner will be a strong contender in the predominantly Republican district.
Other Races
Democrats Clarence Blalock and Shawn Harris are competing in the 14th District to challenge Republican incumbent Marjorie Taylor Greene. In addition, nominees for eight state legislative seats are being decided in runoffs, including the battle between Republican incumbent Steven Sainz and challenger Glenn Cook in House District 180.
With low expected turnout, these runoff elections will determine key candidates for the upcoming general election, potentially shaping the political landscape in Georgia. Stay tuned for the results of these closely watched races.
