One person has died of West Nile virus in Georgia, the state's first reported death from the mosquito-borne illness this year. The Georgia Department of Public Health announced the death on Sept. 16 and said it has confirmed eight human cases in 2026, a number it expects to rise.
Mosquitoes carrying the virus have tested positive in surveillance traps in multiple counties, including Chatham, Fulton, and DeKalb, the health department said, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Those counties include much of metro Atlanta and coastal Savannah.
