Georgia Bulldogs co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Glenn Schumann has been named as a candidate for the North Carolina Tar Heels head coaching job. UNC recently fired head coach Mack Brown.
Schumann is a young, energetic and bright defensive coach for Georgia. He has engineered numerous national championship-winning defenses and is an elite recruiter with several years of experience under Georgia head coach Kirby Smart.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel thinks the UNC head coaching job will be highly valued this offseason. “They immediately become the hottest job on the market,” said Thamel.
“For assistant coaches, Glenn Schumann at Georgia and Al Golden at Notre Dame are two names,” said Thamel.
It should comes as no surprise that Schumann is being named as a head coaching candidate. Schumann has earned it. We’d expect Schumann to be selective in the job he takes similar to two of his mentors and peers in Oregon head coach Dan Lanning and Kirby Smart.
Every major college football program is looking for their Dan Lanning, so there’s no doubt that UNC and other top coaching jobs will consider Schumann this offseason. The Tar Heels need to improve their defense after allowing 70 points (in football, not basketball) to James Madison back in September.
Kirby Smart does not want to lose Schumann, but UNC may be capable of making an offer that Schumann can’t refuse.
“He has been a great reason in my growth, on and off the field,” said Smart on Schumann. “He is someone I can go to talk to about anything, whether it’s football or just life in general. He is one of those coaches. He will always revert it back to life. He is like a life coach to me.”
