That’s all I wanted… Something special, something sacred… and now George Michael fans will be getting just that because a new documentary about the singer is set for worldwide release in the summer.
George Michael Freedom Uncut will premiere on June 22, just three days before the late singer’s birthday.
In a statement released yesterday, Sony Music described the feature-length documentary as “deeply autobiographical” and that the Wham! singer was “heavily involved in and dedicated to the making of this documentary” before his death in 2016.
The film, which is narrated and co-directed by Michael, follows the “turbulent” period after the 1987 release of his Grammy-winning album Faith, to the aftermath of the making of his 1990 record Listen Without Prejudice: Vol. 1.
The documentary is set to lift the curtain on Michael’s closely guarded private life, and will show the documentary meeting his “first real love” Anselmo Feleppa, who died of an AIDS-related illness in 1993. The period also covers the death of the Michael’s mother.
The film is billed to include duets, exclusive archival videos and new footage from behind the scenes of Michael’s music-video Freedom! ’90, which was directed by David Fincher (Fight Club, Se7en).
“The film is George’s final work. Narrated by George himself, it is the complete story,” said David Austin, George Michael’s childhood friend and manager.
“As an artist whose music continues to resonate across generations, this event will be a fitting tribute to George’s life and career, giving fans the opportunity to celebrate communally in cinemas worldwide,” said Marc Allenby, CEO of Trafalgar Releasing who are globally distributing George Michael Freedom Uncut.
In the early Eighties, Michael began his career in the massively successful pop-duo Wham!. He then embarked on a solo career in 1987, releasing his debut solo album Faith which included mega-hits Faith, Father Figure and I Want Your Sex. Among his many accolades, he won two Grammys, 12 Billboard Music Awards and four MTV Video Music Awards.
The singer had a complicated personal life, faced some legal troubles, and fought substance abuse issues. He died in 2016 at the age of 53 from heart and liver issues.
Further details about the countries and cinemas participating in the George Michael Freedom Uncut premiere will listed on GeorgeMichaelFreedomUncut.com from April 27.
