George Hamilton says 'sport has gone to hell' as he takes aim at FIFA following World Cup final

George Hamilton perfectly summed up for many the shambolic scenes as Argentina lifted the World Cup following their win over France.

Lionel Messi was given a black robe to wear as he went up to lift the World Cup trophy with his teammates by the Emir of Qatar, Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, while FIFA President Gianni Infantino wore a pair of personalised trainers for the presentation.

Veteran RTE commentator Hamilton was in Qatar for the tournament and described a photo taken during the trophy presentation by Getty Images' photographer Dan Mullan as a "masterpiece", describing Infantino as a "vainglorious clown".

He wrote on Twitter: "The #FIFAWorldCup captured in one pic by @Dan_Mullan, A masterpiece. The vainglorious clown in his sponsored runners. The man it was all about, obliged to don the sponsor's cloak to cover his national shirt. And the smiling benefactor. Sport has gone to hell in a handcart."

Hamilton was far from the only person bemused by the scene of Messi lifting the World Cup trophy in the see-through black robe.

BBC presenter Lineker felt the decision spoiled what should have been a “magic moment”.

The former England striker said: “This is a magic moment. It seems a shame in a way that they’ve covered up Messi in his Argentina shirt.”

Ex-Argentina defender Zabaleta agreed, saying on BBC One: “Just why? No reason to do that.”

And a number of fans told Hamilton that he was spot on with his summary.

One wrote: "Spot on George. An exquisite summation, not sword wasted, and there's a ringing in my ears from all the marks it hit."

Another tweeted: "There's so much to dislike about that World Cup which is nothing to do with the football. The commercialism & corruption is sickening."

Someone else said: "Perfect commentary as ever @HamiltonRTE you’ve made a still image so cinematic."
