Gennady Golovkin takes on Ryota Murata in Japan today, hoping to tee up a massive trilogy showdown with rival Canelo Alvarez.
It’s expected that two of the biggest names in boxing will meet in the ring for a third time in September if they both come through their upcoming fights, and it’s Golovkin, defending his IBF and IBO belts against WBA ‘super’ champion Murata, who first has to ensure he keeps his full focus on the task at hand in a unification clash.
Having not fought since December 2020, there will be concerns that inactivty could hamper Golovkin, against a dangerous fighter buoyed by home support.
The Kazakh boxer - who turned 40 on Friday - has said in the build-up he believes it could be a fight-of-the-year contender.
