Pancake day, or Shrove Tuesday, is celebrated across the world. The event was originally seen as a ‘feast day’ before lent, Ash Wednesday, where Christians give up things much like Jesus when he fasted.
Over the years, Shrove Tuesday has become less about the religious aspect and more about the pancakes you make. From the traditional topping of lemon juice and sugar to a wild variety of toppings like ice cream, chocolate and fruit, people have made the dish their own.
With pancake day being tomorrow and having never made one on my own before, I decided I would attempt to make the treat from scratch. Having never made them on my own, always doing them with my mum, I was a little apprehensive as to how they would turn out.
To be on the safe side, I decided to follow a recipe that I got from the BBC Good Food website. The recipe said the prep time was 10 minutes while cooking time was 20 minutes, so the perfect amount of time. It only required four ingredients: 100g of plain flour, 2 large eggs, 300ml of milk and a tablespoon of oil.
I started off by measuring out all my ingredients before mixing them all together into a smooth batter in a jug. I did find that while I had whisked the mixture for a long time, there were still small lumps lingering at the top of the batter. Once the batter was ready, I slightly oiled my pan, I only had a frying pan, and left it to heat up so it would be ready.

My first attempt was a little dodgy, it got stuck to the bottom of the pan, despite my greasing, causing it to burn a little and go crispy. This then made my flip a little problematic as it wasn’t as floppy as it should be due to my overcooking. It was edible but definitely not what I was aiming for.
The next attempt went much better, the bottom had a nice golden brown colour and wasn’t as crispy as my first attempt. I feel I may need to do some practice in the flipping department as for some reason they didn’t want to flip fully, getting stuck halfway.
Overall, I felt like I did an okay job of making pancakes for the first time, especially considering I was using completely the wrong pan for the job. I think I needed to use more oil to prevent the sticking but they all tasted really good so the batter was perfectly made. While I wouldn’t say I’m a pancake connoisseur, I think I made a decent attempt despite the nightmare at the beginning.
