Former love birds Gemma Owen and Luca Bish embarked on a make or break holiday to Dubai in an attempt to fix their rocky romance.
The couple, who met on Love Island this year, reportedly nearly split up "quite a few times" before their final parting.
Luca claims that he was "blindsided" by their split, but a source has revealed that their relationship "always had cracks".
"In no way was Luca blindsided, they'd been on the rocks for quite a few weeks. They'd nearly split up quite a few times before this," an insider told MailOnline.
"Cracks had been forming the past few weeks, they brushed it over. They tried to go to Dubai to see if it would help but things didn't change," they continued.
Gemma shared a statement about the split on Instagram, which seemed to annoy Luca - who issued his own shortly after, saying that he wished he'd had time to "process" the break up.
"Switched my phone back on after taking some time out to clear my head after an emotional afternoon to thousands of messages and news articles about my break up," Luca wrote on Instagram.
"I would have liked some time to process this privately, but as you already now know sadly Gemma and I made the mutual decision earlier today to go our separate ways."
He added that the pair will "remain good friends" and that he wishes "nothing but the best for her".
Sharing the news with fans, Gemma wrote on Instagram: "I wanted to let you know that Luca and I are no longer in a relationship.
"It wasn't an easy decision but ultimately this is what is best for us both right now.
"Many of you have been on this journey with us from the very beginning and I want to thank you for your continued support as we start new chapters."
A source previously told The Sun: "Luca had no idea that Gemma was going to end things.
"He feels really embarrassed about the whole thing. He was gushing about her at events this week - while she was planning to end it."

Luca's last photo of them together was on firework night, where he captioned the snap: "experiencing another first with you".
The couple didn't become official while they were in the villa as Gemma wanted to wait for Luca to meet her dad Michael Owen and her mum.
They remained faithful to each other through Casa Amor and came second in the show this year.
