KOLKATA: It was a grand homecoming that all Kolkata Knight Riders' fans will welcome. KKR's former skipper Gautam Gambhir was on Wednesday named the 'mentor' of the franchise starting with the upcoming IPL season. A T20 (2007) and ODI (2011) World Cup champion, Gambhir had a fruitful run with the KKR from 2011-17 leading the side to title victories in 2012 and 2014.
During the period, the Knights qualified for the IPL playoffs five times and also made the final of the now-defunct Champions League T20 in 2014. Gambhir was working as the 'mentor' of the Lucknow Super Giants and was subsequently elevated to the role of the franchise's "global mentor", which also made him a part of Durban's Super Giants in the SA20 league in South Africa.
