Gateshead council cabinet approves proposed parliamentary boundary changes

Gateshead council cabinet has been recommended to advise the full council to agree to new parliamentary boundary changes.

The wards of Dunston and Teams will be absorbed into the Blaydon parliamentary constituency, represented by Liz Twist MP. Blaydon has been represented in parliament by Liz Twist MP since 2017.

Pelaw and Heworth and Wardley and Leam will be included into the parliamentary constituency of Gateshead, represented by Ian Mearns MP. Ian Mearns has represented the people of Gateshead as an MP since 2010.

The proposed changes are recommended by the Boundary Commission for England, a public body responsible for reviewing the suitability of constituencies every five years.

A parliamentary constituency requires a population between 69,724 and 77,062. Both Blaydon and Gateshead are below this minimum threshold.

With the recommended changes the populations of Gateshead and Blaydon as constituencies would amount to 70,552 and 74,066 respectively.

Dunston and Teams councillor Brenda Clellan said: "Broadly yes, I am supportive of the proposed changes because they keep Gateshead as a borough in entirety."

Coun Clellan went on to say that the residents of Dunston and Team would be well represented by Liz Twist MP.

The council report also claims the alterations are preferable as the resulting constituencies will be of the right size and be entirely in the administrative area of Gateshead.

In addition, according to the report the proposed changes factor in geographical considerations, recognising the river Tyne as an important natural boundary as well as local ties.

A secondary consultation regarding boundary changes will continue until Monday 4th of April 2022 by the Boundary Commission for England.

Members of the public can make their voices heard regarding the changes on the Boundary Commission's website.

It is expected a final report and recommendations will be ready by the 1st of July 2023 with the final proposals and changes made into law by late 2023.
