Four Gatehouse of Fleet Golf Club members undertook the Prostate Cancer UK Golf Marathon on June 15, raising more than £2,200 for Prostate Cancer UK.
Team “Not So Fleet”, comprising team Captain Harry Thomson, Mike Nesbit, Brendan Butler and Scott White teed off at 6am and by 8pm they had completed eight rounds of the hilly nine-hole course.
In some of the best weather of the year to date, the four golfers enjoyed the relative cool of the morning rounds before beginning to sweat mightily before and after lunch. Despite this, some good scores were had, with Scott in particular returning two net five-under-pars for 18 holes. On top of that, he played nine holes whilst the others were taking a break, as he had a county bowls match to take part in at Kirkcudbright that evening.
Harry said afterwards: “It’s probably fair to say we all enjoyed the day but may not do it again for a year or two. We’re very grateful for the support we have received from other club members, in terms of spare trolleys and batteries, as well as general encouragement, and from Galloway Lodge Coffee Shop and The Masonic Arms, who made sure we kept our carb count up during the day.
"Most of all, we would like to thank all those who donated sponsorship to team “Not So Fleet.” The total we’ve raised is beyond all our expectations and will help in research into and support for those suffering from prostate cancer which is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the UK today, killing one man every 45 minutes.”
