Gatehouse Gala got off to the best possible start at Garries Park in glorious weather on Sunday afternoon as hundreds enjoyed the traditional opening ceremony and afternoon entertainment.
Parasol tables around the stage added to the carnival atmosphere as the royal party arrived at the arena, headed by local piper Regan McKie.
To applause from the large crowd, Gatehouse Gala Queen Isabella Du Rose Nelson ascended the stage with fellow P7 pupil and consort Ramsay Wilson, attendant Rowan Dodds and page Liam McKie, both P3, as well as Gatehouse Riding of the Marches representatives, provost Helen Keating and gala committee chairperson Sara-leigh Cain.
Speeches included ‘Welcome to the gala’, from Sara-leigh, ‘Welcome to Gatehouse’ by the provost and the traditional pledges from standard bearer Karen Martin, Fleet Lad Keith Donaldson and Fleet Lass Kirsty Johnstone.
Ramsay read the consort’s address before Gala Queen Isabella declared the gala officially open.
Formalities over, veteran entertainer and singer Jesse Garron took to the stage to deliver a great performance which soon had the crowd up on their feet.
Thanking event sponsors Laggan, gala committee chairperson Sara-leigh was delighted the gala was back in full swing after being disrupted by Covid.
She said: “It was a phenomenal day really enjoyed by everyone who attended.
“It was so refreshing to be able to have the opening Sunday without any restrictions for the first time in three years.
“It made all the hard work of the gala committee worthwhile and people had their dancing shoes on for the Rocking Rebel entertainer Jesse Garron.”
After last night’s torchlight procession and fireworks, gala festivities continue today with Gala Open Day at Gatehouse Community Centre from 11am to 2pm.
Attractions on the menu include free fun activities for children, a pop-up cafe with home baking, a plant stall and e-bike sessions.
Martin Smith will provide the music and donations can be made to the Beatson Centre in Glasgow.
Top billing on Saturday goes to the Grand Parade and fancy dress competition, followed by an afternoon of entertainment in Garries Park.
