Gas firm SGN provide update on major Kincaidston works as Ayr estate's pipes upgraded

Gas firm SGN say its work to replace iron gas mains in an Ayr housing estate is progressing well.

The company has been carrying out a complete overhaul of the mains supply to Kincaidston after residents raised concerns following the devastating explosion in Gorse Park last October.

Safety concerns over the gas supply were raised after a number of leaks were identified in the estate in the weeks following the blast which ripped through four homes and left a family-of-four seriously injured.

A campaign led by community leader Robert Dunn demanded action.

Work commenced in November with SGN vowing to replace all iron pipes in Kincaidston with a safer plastic alternative.

Last week, engineers completed some of the upgrades in Kincaidston Drive, Honeysuckle Place, Rockrose Park and Rush Hill.

The focus has now turned to Iris Court which will be worked on between numbers 20 to 26. Engineers will also work on upgrades at 8 to 13 Cornhill and continue on Kincaidston Drive covering 77 to 125.

Residents have been told there may be temporary traffic lights where work is taking place and footpaths may also be closed.

A spokesperson for SGN said: "It may be necessary for us to use temporary traffic lights around our work area for a few days to ensure everyone's safety, but we'll ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.

"We'll need to close a few footpaths around our work area too, but we will drop a letter through your door if you'll be directly affected and pedestrian diversion routes will be in place.

"If you have any queries, do feel free to call us on 0800 912 1717 and our team will arrange for the area manager to get in touch with you."
