Gary Neville takes cheap shot at Jamie Carragher with commentary for Man City title winner

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville had fun at the expense of his Monday Night Football colleague Jamie Carragher on the final day of the Premier League season.

Neville was on co-commentary duty as Manchester City wrapped up the title with a dramatic comeback victory over Aston Villa.

Goals from Matty Cash and Philippe Coutinho had put Steven Gerrard's side 2-0 up with just 20 minutes left, but two goals from Ilkay Gundogan and one from Rodri gave Pep Guardiola's side the title.

Liverpool came from behind themselves, beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1, but Gundogan's late winner ended up deciding the title in City's favour. Neville was on form for it, too, invoking an earlier memorable moment from former Liverpool captain Carragher.

"Gundogan, you little dancer," were Neville's words as Sky Sports replayed the German international's decisive goal. It was a reference to Carragher saying the same about Reds star Mohamed Salah when Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur during the 2018-19 run-in.

It wasn't even the first time the moment has been brought up in an exchange between the former England defenders. Back in 2020, as Neville joked about Liverpool bottling the title, Carragher quote-tweeted his colleague with the words "Mo Salah, you little dancer" when the Egyptian scored a big goal.

Salah was on target in Liverpool's win on Sunday, despite starting the game on the bench following advice from the club's medical team. That wasn't enough for him to win the Premier League golden boot outright, though - Son Heung-min's double for Tottenham at Norwich City ensured he and Salah will share the award.

Neville's reference didn't go unnoticed by fans on social media. "Gary Neville just said “you little dancer”, Carragher is crying right now," one said.

"Neville subtly mugging Carragher by calling Gundogan a little dancer there," was the response from another. "@gnev2 commentary for the winner was fantastic. We all know what you said," added another.

The 47-year-old may have been nervous as Liverpool looked to be in with a chance of glory, with Jurgen Klopp's side potentially in line to better Manchester United's 1998-99 treble winners. However, when the title went City's way he shared a quote from the time from United boss Alex Ferguson: "“They’ll be trying for a long time son to do what we’ve just done”.

Liverpool will need to pick themselves up from the disappointment quickly, with another huge game around the corner. Klopp's men are set to take on Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday, and they may have to do so without some first-teamers.

Divock Origi missed the chance for a farewell appearance through injury, while Thiago left the field at half-time with an injury. Fabinho is also touch-and-go for the final, but Salah and Virgil van Dijk returned to the matchday squad for the final league game.

"Divock Origi in the last day of training got a muscle injury which is not great news," Klopp revealed. "I would have loved to say goodbye on the pitch. It's all good, it's not that serious so whichever club he chooses we wish him the best of luck and he will be fine."
