Gary Neville pinpoints Manchester United mistake that led to Crystal Palace equaliser

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville criticised the wall that attempted to prevent Michael Olise's late equaliser for Crystal Palace on Wednesday night.

United and Palace battled for momentum during the early stages with the Reds having David de Gea to thank for keeping them level when he produced a spectacular stop to deny Odsonne Edouard. That missed chance would come back to bite the hosts just before half time when Bruno Fernandes fired home after a cutback from Christian Eriksen.

The Reds looked as though they had done enough to seal yet another victory but Olise had other ideas. His long range free kick crashed in off the bar to ensure the points were shared in South London.

While many applauded the quality of the free kick, Neville pointed out on Twitter that the goal could have been avoided if the wall was better. In a couple of tweets, he explained: "That wall was never big enough.

"Always going to shoot," before adding: "Put the taker off. A massive wall with big players in makes it more difficult for a taker. That wall lacked presence and made it look inviting."

The three-man wall which United assembled included Casemiro, Fred and Alejandro Garnacho. Brazilian midfielder Casemiro is the tallest of the players at 6ft but the ball would eventually be struck over the head of Fred who is much smaller.

United are now level on points with Manchester City but they remain in third due to their inferior goal difference. City can extend their advantage over United when they host Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday evening.

Next up for Erik ten Hag's men is a big clash with Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday. United will be missing Casemiro for that clash through suspension after the midfielder picked up his fifth yellow card of the season against Palace.
