Gary Neville hails 'sensational' Newcastle character in win over Nottingham Forest

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has heaped praise on Newcastle United's character after coming from behind to beat Nottingham Forest. Emmanuel Dennis gave the hosts the lead following a mistake from Sven Botman, with Alexander Isak restoring parity on the brink of half-time.

Elliot Anderson thought he'd given the Magpies the lead in the second-half but it was chalked off in bizarre fashion after VAR adjudged Sean Longstaff to be offside in the build-up, despite two Forest players hitting the ball off him. Paul Tierney awarded the Toon a late penalty after Moussa Diakhate handled the ball.

After some gamesmanship, Isak converted from the spot to wrap up all three points in a big win for the Magpies heading into the international break.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville said: "Absolutely, Newcastle were the better team all night, they had the better chances. They had that controversial goal disallowed.

"It's a moment of madness in the end from Niakhate that's give Alex Isak the opportunity to score the penalty to win the game. Those Newcastle fans over in that far corner, they'll have a great journey home and they'll really feel buoyant now towards the end of the season.

"It's a big confidence boost to that top-four charge. I think the late win is absolutely sensational for Newcastle but the performance all night was very good.

"Obviously they had a problem with scoring goals. They've been very good defensively but tonight I thought they created and had lots of chances.

"They hit the bar and they seemed to have moments go against them. I think Eddie Howe will be fuming at the end of that game if his team hadn't got the three points. But they can go home really happy."
