England have lost 2-1 against France in the World Cup quarter-finals as they join Portugal, the Netherlands and Brazil in exiting the tournament. Harry Kane equalled Wayne Rooney's Three Lions goalscoring record on the night but missed a crucial penalty to equalise a second time in the dying minutes of the match.
Aurelien Tchouameni scored France's opening goal in the 17th minute before Kane equalised with a penalty early in the second half. Arsenal's Bukayo Saka was seemingly fouled in the build-up to Les Bleus' opening goal in the first half but VAR deemed that the goal was allowed to stand.
Kane equalised from the spot before Olivier Giroud scored the winner with a powerful header past Jordan Pickford. The England players were left dejected and devastated after the full-time whistle was blown after a game full of controversial referee and VAR decisions.
