Sky Sports pundits Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher both agreed that Newcastle goalkeeper Loris Karius should have done better with Manchester United's second goal in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, with Carragher at pains to point out that the German's rustiness was largely to blame.
Former Liverpool goalkeeper Karius came into the Newcastle side for his first competitive appearance in two years after Magpies No.1 Nick Pope was suspended after being sent off against the Reds last week, with No.2 Martin Dubravka cup-tied after playing for the Red Devils earlier this season.
That thrust Karius into the spotlight, with many quickly turning their minds back to his nightmare for Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final.
Karius, who it was discovered had concussion after that Kyiv final against Real Madrid, made two high profile errors and never played a competitive game for the Reds again.
He had started well in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, but conceded when Casemiro headed home a free-kick from Luke Shaw.
United's second then arrived six minutes later when Wout Weghorst found Marcus Rashford, and his effort took a huge deflection off Sven Botman before going over Karius' outstretched hand and into the net.
It was an unfortunate moment for the goalkeeper and Botman, who was later credited with the own goal.
Commentating on Sky Sports, both Neville and Carragher agreed that Karius could have done better for the strike.
Neville said: "There is a deflection, it wasn't the greatest strike from Marcus Rashford, but the goalkeeper is going down very early, maybe for the first shot, and then his hand... he just can't get enough on it and it goes over his head.
The former United defender then asked Carragher: "There was a lot of focus on Karius coming into the game, do you think he should have saved it?"
Carragher agreed: "Yeah he should have saved it, of course he should.
"It's easy to look back, and certainly with the presence and size and stature of Nick Pope, you think he'd have dealt with that comfortably.
"I think the biggest worry with Karius or any Newcastle fan with the goalkeeper was his lack of football, not what happened in a certain game four or five years ago. He'll lack sharpness and confidence no doubt."
