Gary Lineker pulls out of BBC FA Cup coverage as Alex Scott replaces him

Gary Lineker has pulled out of hosing the BBC's coverage of Brighton's FA Cup clash against Grimsby Town through illness and will be swiftly replaced by Alex Scott.

The broadcaster confirmed the news via Twitter with a short update that read: "Due to illness, we've got a line-up change for today's live FA Cup coverage of Brighton v Grimsby on BBC One.

"As viewers will have noticed yesterday, Gary Lineker was struggling with his voice and unfortunately it has deteriorated overnight. Alex Scott will be hosting instead."

Lineker returned to the BBC on Saturday night for the first time since the controversial decision from the organisation to briefly suspend him from work after he tweeted criticism of the Government's bill on illegal migrants.

He presented Manchester City's FA Cup 6-0 victory over Burnley at the Etihad, but it was clear to many viewing that Lineker was struggling with his voice.

Lineker's presence at the City game meant he was unable to host Match of the Day for the second weekend in a row, following last week's suspension, which inspired a mass walk-out from many of the presenter's colleagues.

That includes his replacement for today in Scott, who refused to host last Saturday's Football Focus in solidarity with Lineker.

An agreement was eventually reached between the BBC and Lineker for him to return to work after lengthy talks with director general Tim Davie.

Both Alan Shearer and Ian Wright, who often feature alongside Lineker regularly on Match of the Day, also walked away from their roles until the presenter was allowed to return.

In a statement on social media on Monday, Lineker revealed how pleased he was to come to an agreement.

He tweeted: "After a surreal few days, I’m delighted that we have navigated a way through this. I want to thank you all for the incredible support, particularly my colleagues at BBC Sport, for the remarkable show of solidarity. Football is a team game but their backing was overwhelming.

"I have been presenting sport on the BBC for almost three decades and am immeasurably proud to work with the best and fairest broadcaster in the world. I cannot wait to get back in the MOTD chair on Saturday.

"A final thought: however difficult the last few days have been, it simply doesn’t compare to having to flee your home from persecution or war to seek refuge in a land far away. It’s heartwarming to have seen the empathy towards their plight from so many of you."
