Gary Lineker disagrees with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher over Man City controversy

Gary Lineker has disagreed with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher over a refereeing decision in the Premier League.

Sunday saw Manchester City held to a 3-3 draw with Newcastle United at St James’ Park. The result leaves Liverpool five points behind Pep Guardiola’s side going into their clash against Manchester United on Monday night.

One controversial decision in the match on Tyneside came in the second half, when Kieran Trippier was shown a red card for a tackle on Kevin De Bruyne. After a VAR review, referee Jarred Gillett reversed his decision and handed Trippier a yellow.

After watching the decision, Carragher took to Twitter to give his opinion. The former Liverpool defender felt that Trippier’s challenge was worthy of a sending off, and that the wrong decision was made.

"That Trippier tackle is going to be a red in the future,” wrote Carragher on Twitter.

“It's not a leg breaker, but why should a player be able to take someone out at knee height with no intention of winning the ball?"

In contrast, Match of the Day pundit Gary Lineker disagreed with Carragher’s view. Lineker argued that the right decision was to hand the Newcastle defender merely a caution.

"Agree with VAR decision,” wrote Lineker. “Cynical foul but yellow the right colour.”
