Gary Lineker comments as Man Utd set new unwanted record in abysmal Brighton defeat

Manchester United were beaten in emphatic fashion by mid-table Brighton & Hove Albion as the Seagulls ran riot to put four past Ralf Rangnick's men with no reply.

A notably disastrous second-half performance that saw Graham Potter's side cut United open at will produced one of the most miserable afternoon's the travelling Red Devils' fans have endured in recent memory. United were four goals down with 30 minutes still to play and could have been on the end of an even worse score-line had it not been for some wasteful finishing from their hosts.

Ex-England international and Match of the Day host Gary Lineker could not resist mentioning just how woeful United were at the Amex, while also waxing lyrical about Brighton's efforts. The former Barcelona forward tweeted: "Good heavens! @OfficialBHAFC are playing some fabulous football. By contrast this might be @ManUtd’s worst performance of the season…and that’s quite an achievement."

In fairness, United interim boss Rangnick echoed his sentiments as the German issued fans with an apology due to the dismal display they witnessed. The former RB Leipzig boss is famed for his brutal honesty and it was much of the same from him come full-time.

""It was a terrible performance. From the first until the last minute it was not enough; we can only apologise for this performance and a humiliating defeat," Rangnick explained.

The temporary United boss insisted that last Monday's win over Brentford was "a different game, we just gave too much time and space. We were never in a position where we could stop them playing through our lines, We told the players be as compact as they could but we couldn't stop it."

Brighton's four goals also ensured another unwanted record was set by this current crop of misfiring United stars. The Red Devils have now conceded more goals this season than any other campaign in their illustrious Premier League history.

The nature of the defeat also prompted the overwhelming majority of the away end to burst into a chorus of 'you're not fit to wear the shirt' - something that not even Bruno Fernandes could disagree with.

After the game, the Portugal international held his hands up and conceded `both he and his teammates were way off the pace. "I include myself in that. What we did today, what I did today, was not enough to be in a Man Utd shirt and I accept it.

"They outplayed us. They always had a solution. Pressed us better and they deserved the result," Fernandes continued. "A little bit of everything [went wrong] Quality. Mentality. They deserved to win and we deserve to be in the position we are in now. It's something that we have to look and be embarrassed because that was not good enough from us and we have to do much better."
