Leeds Rhinos chief executive Gary Hetherington will fly to Australia this week to interview candidates for the vacant head coaching role at the club. Hetherington will travel down under this weekend to continue his search for the next man to take the hotseat after starting an 'exhaustive search' to find the right person for the role.
Hetherington confirmed his plans in an open letter to supporters following the club's Challenge Cup defeat to Castleford Tigers. In it, he explained what he was looking for in a coach, as well as acknowledging the club's terrible start to the season.
"Long term, we find ourselves in need of a new head coach," Hetherington said. "At Leeds, that appointment carries many unique opportunities and the ideal candidate will offer both coaching expertise but, perhaps as importantly, be a leader with a vision for how this team will evolve and become the Champion side we know it can be. I believe this appointment is as important as my decision to bring Tony Smith in back in 2003. In contrast, back then we were challenging for honours on all fronts but needed to go to the next level with a new appointment.
