Garth Crooks hits out at Leeds United defence following 4-3 Tottenham Hotspur defeat

BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has criticised Leeds United's defending after they fell 4-3 to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

The Whites let three separate leads slip, allowing Spurs to come back into the game and win it late on through midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

Jesse Marsch and co showed real promise in attack on Saturday afternoon but their defence, which has conceded a whopping 26 goals this term, let them down when it mattered most.

With 26 goals conceded, that makes the Whites defence the joint fourth worst in the Premier League. The 4-3 defeat to Spurs was the third time in four games the Whites have conceded three goals or more.

While Leeds did win games against Liverpool and Bournemouth recently in dramatic fashion, there is no way that style of play is sustainable over a season. And Crooks believes the Whites' defensive woes gave Leeds no chance of picking up a result away against Spurs.

"Leeds United cannot be expected to score four goals to get a point away from home and five to win a match," wrote Crooks in his BBC Sport Team of the Week column.

"They were the demands imposed by their defence on their strikers against a Tottenham side full of errors. Spurs have not played well since their defeat at the Emirates against Arsenal, although they have been picking up points.

"However, the return of Dejan Kulusevski to the starting line-up after injury has given the team a touch of quality in the most important areas. The 22-year-old Swedish international set up two superb goals as he continues to prove to be an invaluable addition to a very unconvincing Tottenham team at the moment."
