Gartcairn assistant boss Scott Mills says his side hope they can pounce if league-leaders Cambuslang Rangers slip up, but reckons they’ve done enough to prove they’re worthy of a step-up.
No.2 Mills was left frustrated when their clash at Dalry Thistle was postponed at the weekend, because a win would have put them top by a point – though their rivals would then have had four games in hand.
The Airdrie club have only four more games left in their West of Scotland League Conference B campaign, but Mills says all they can do is focus on what they do.
He said: “I’d rather have kept going. We’re playing well just now, we’re on a good run, we’re scoring goals and looking dangerous, and we could have gone top of the league.
“Cambuslang have put themselves in an amazing position, but you can only do what you can do, and put points on the board.
“If there’s any chance for us to put any sort of pressure on them, it would have been nice to do it on Saturday.
“Cambuslang have been fantastic; they’ve only lost two games, one to us and one to St Cadoc’s, so it shows the consistency they’ve had over all the teams in the division, that maybe us and St Cadoc’s haven’t.
“But we can only look after ourselves.”
Gartcairn have a free weekend and are back in league action on March 5 at Renfrew.
Mills added: “You can’t help but keep an eye on what’s happening everywhere, but our focus is just game by game, keep winning and see where we end up at the end of the league.
“I think a couple of wins secures us a place in the new Championship next season, so it will be good to get that done and dusted first.
“Where you end up after that it will be nice to see.
“We’ve never been that far out of the top three, there’s always a point that you can look back on and think ‘if only’, but we’ve got four games to go, and we’re confident.”
