Pop Idol star Gareth Gates has announced he will be playing Squidward in The SpongeBob Musical in Dublin.
Coming to the Bord Gais Energy theatre in May, SpongeBob is a “hilarious deep-sea pearl of a show that is set to make a splash with audiences young and old”.
Gareth shared his announcement on Instagram, saying: “I’m thrilled to announce that I’ll be making a splash as Squidward in SpongeBob the UK tour! Performing at selected venues only.”

The iconic 2000s singer is set to star in the Tony Award-nominated musical along with Ru-Paul’s Drag Race star Divina De Campo as Plankton. Joining them is Lewis Cornay as SpongeBob, Irfan Damani as Patrick, Chrissie Bhima as Sandy and Richard J Hunt as Mr. Krabs.
The show promises to be “all-singing, all-dancing and dynamic”. The plot will revolve around SpongeBob and friends discovering that a volcano will soon erupt and destroy their humble home. The Bikini Bottom citizens must then come together to save the fate of their undersea world, with a “most unexpected hero” rising up.
The musical is based on the original Nickelodeon series and will feature original songs by a myriad of stars so there’s a lot of potential for a few bops. Songs by David Bowie, Aerosmith legends Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, and They Might Be Giants feature on the soundtrack.
The Broadway hit is set to premiere in Dublin on 9th May and will run until 13th May, with tickers starting from €21.50. Tickets can be purchased from Ticketmaster.
