Gareth Bale leaves commentators in awe with 'amazing' shot on PGA Tour golf debut

Gareth Bale has dazzled onlookers on his PGA Tour debut, hitting a stunning chip on the first day of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in the United States.

The famous event, which takes place at the famous Californian links, sees a number of celebrity players compete alongside some of the world's top golfers.

The five-time Champions League winner teamed up with former Korn Ferry Tour Championship winner Joseph Bramlett, with the pair ending the day by hitting an impressive seven-under-par 65 on the Spyglass Hill course.

Bale admitted he was nervous when interviewed shortly before his opening tee shot, but managed to settle himself by making par on the opening hole.

Not a bad start. However, he found himself in a spot of bother on hole two, with his third shot coming on the cart path near the pin.

But, as he did so often in his footballing career, the Welshman produced a moment of pure magic, hitting a delightful chip that landed him just yards away from the hole on the green.

It was a shot that stunned one commentator, who said: "Got a drop off of the path. This is where he's hitting his third shot at the second. He goes low and he hits an amazing shot inside four feet!"

Discussing his shot afterwards, Bale said: "I am more worried about how I found myself [on the path] in the first place, but I guess a lot of amateurs find themselves in that position.

"It was a great shot and I just tried to play into the bank and hope for the best like most amateurs do.

"It was nice to see it roll up nice and close and he was pretty much in for par so I was like 'I will pick it up' and he made me putt it because he was like 'this is going to be the greatest up-and-down'.

"I finished off nicely and it was a great shot, I can't really say much more."

The former Wales captain recently made a similarly strong impression on world number three Jon Rahm, who spent some time playing with Bale before the event and was taken aback by Welshman's talent.

"I told Gareth, 'you can't be so good at professional football and golf at the same time, it just doesn't seem fair'," he said.

"Can't be dedicated to one thing and have this much talent for golf, it's not fair in the slightest."

Bale, who announced his retirement from football after leading Wales into the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, is one of 156 amateurs participating in the competition, which runs until February 5. Other celebrities present include actor Bill Murray, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, actor Jason Bateman, rapper Mackelmore, and Buffalo Bills quarter back Josh Allen.

The same number of professionals are also competing, with US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and world number five Patrick Cantlay among the big names.
