Gardens go vertical amid shrinking spaces in Bengaluru

BENGALURU: Saanvi J, a homemaker, has turned one wall of the small balcony of her Basavanagudi home into a vertical garden. Having lived most of her life in her parents’ independent home in Sadashiv Nagar with a sprawling garden, the 34-year-old misses the greenery and fragrance of moist soil and plants in her fifth-floor flat.

“When the pandemic began, and my husband began working from home, we set up my vertical garden. It has plants like aloe vera, shrubs, and even kothimir. It feels like I have a piece of my childhood in my balcony now,” said Saanvi, adding that a normal garden was not an option as it would restrict the open space in the balcony.
