Gardai stand down search for missing Dublin man Dean McCann after body found in Galway

A search for a young man missing for the last nine days has been stood down after a body was found in Co Galway over the weekend.

Dean McCann went missing from his home in Drumcondra, Co Dublin on February 5.

The 28-year-old was last sighted at a Bank of Ireland ATM in Eyre Square, Galway city shortly after 7am the following morning.

Gardai had issued several appeals for information in relation to his disappearance, while Dean's family had also played a prominent role in seeking details about the young man's whereabouts.

His sister Tara issued a renewed appeal on Friday morning, just one day before her brother's body was recovered in Dangan, Co Galway on Saturday.

Dean is described as being 5ft 11in tall with dark hair, a beard, braces and light blue eyes (Facebook)

Sharing the missing persons appeal for Dean, she said: "PLEASE share and send on to people with large followings. He also has braces, and a soft Dublin accent with an American twang.

"We’re really hoping for CCTV to help us see if he got on a bus or train or something to somewhere new as he had been moving around before Galway. How could he be in such a busy location of Eyre Square and no one sees anything.

"He could still be in Galway, but we need every single county on the lookout. You are all amazing and we feel you waiting and praying with us.

"Everyone wants Dean home safe. When he lived abroad he called my mam every single day, she has never gone a day without hearing her first baby’s voice. They have such a special bond.

"Dean said he wanted to help people in need when he left, that he wanted to do good. He is so kind hearted and we love him more than anything.

"His clothes could be different now, they could be the same. But please keep all the clothing in mind, the shoes (black Adidas with white soles and blue and red/ multicoloured stripes) and please please keep his face in mind.

"The light blue eyes, he has big lips. His hair is like in the pics but he has a long razor line on one side of his head too. I can’t believe we’re waking up to another day without him.

"Even when I’m trying my best looking for him I expect him to just walk by or sit down beside me. Forever grateful for the love and support. We will get him home."

Gardai confirmed on Monday that their search for Dean had been stood down after a body was found on Saturday.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Following the recovery of a body in Dangan, Co Galway on Sunday, February 13, 2022, the missing person appeal in respect of Dean McCann, 28 years, has been stood down.

"An Garda Siochana would like to thank the media and public for their assistance in this matter. No further action is required and no further information is available at this time."
