Gardai rush to the scene as young man, 20s, dies after horror crash at car rally in Co Kerry

A man in his 20s has died following a crash at a rally event in Co Kerry on Sunday afternoon.

The incident happened during the Killarney Forest Rally at Mount Eagle in Castleisland at around 3pm.

A driver, who was in his 20s, crashed during the race and was rushed to Cork University Hospital with serious injuries.

However, he later died in hospital.

A second man, who is in his 30s and who was a passenger in the vehicle, was also taken to Cork University Hospital following the crash.

He is currently being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The event was halted after the incident, with event organisers issuing a statement on Sunday night.

Killarney and District Motor Club said: "The Killarney and District Motor Club regrets to inform that following an accident on stage four of the Killarney Forest Rally, a competitor succumbed to his injuries and passed away in Cork University Hospital tonight.

"We extend our sympathies to his family and friends. May he Rest in Peace."

Gardai said they would liaise with the relevant agencies following the incident.

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardai and Emergency Services attended the scene of a fatal single-vehicle road traffic collision that occurred at approximately 3pm on Sunday, February 20, 2022, at a rally event at Mount Eagle, Castleisland, County Kerry.

"The driver of the car involved, a man in his 20s, suffered serious injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he later passed away.

"The passenger of the vehicle, a man in his 30s, was taken to Cork University Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

"An Garda Siochana are engaging with the relevant agencies in relation to this matter.

"An Garda Siochana have no further information available at this time."
