Gardaí and family members of a man shot dead in Mayo in 2013 are appealing to the public for help in their continued investigation.
Sunday marks the ninth anniversary of the murder of Owen Maughan who was fatally wounded after being shot at a service station in the west of Ireland.
The incident occurred on the Moneen Road in Castlebar at around 3:30 pm on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 18, 2013.
Owen and his wife Anna lived locally in the area and were married for eight years before his untimely death at just 26 years of age.
According to Gardaí, early on December 18, Owen and Anne headed into town to run a few errands.
Later that afternoon they went home and Anne prepared lunch before Owen left to go to a nearby service station to fill up some water canisters.
At the station, a number of shots were fired from a vehicle described as a BMW Estate car - graphite grey in colour.
Gardaí say they know that the BMW Estate car was stolen from a hotel near Dublin Airport, on December 6, 2013.
They believe this vehicle was in the Dublin area for some time after this and would have refuelled a number of times.
The registration of the car was 06G3981 but it was fitted with cloned registration plates with 09D30024.
Following the shooting on December 18, 2013, this car left via the Claremorris road and was discovered two days later at Derryvohey in Mayo, but it had been destroyed by fire.
Despite extensive Garda enquiries, no arrests have been made in relation to this investigation.
Nine years on, Gardaí and Owens’ family are appealing for people to come forward to assist with the investigation.
In a statement, a garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí would encourage anyone with information, no matter how insignificant it may seem, to come forward to them.
