Gardai launch probe after man in his 40s dies following assault in Limerick City

Gardai have launched a probe into the death of a man in Limerick City last night after he was assaulted on the street.

Officers and emergency services rushed to the scene at around 10:25 pm on Friday where a man in his 40s was discovered with serious injuries on Parnell Street.

He was taken to University Hospital Limerick for treatment but later passed away according to gardai.

The scene is currently preserved to allow for a technical examination to take place today.

Meanwhile, the Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem is being conducted later today.

Gardaí say they are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault and have asked for anyone that may have been in the Parnell Street, Lord Edward Street, and Davis Street areas of Limerick last night, between 10:00 pm and 10:40 pm to come forward.

If anyone has camera footage of the area they are asked to make this available to Gardaí.

Similarly, if any road users were travelling in the area and who may have camera (including dash cam) footage, they are asked to make this available to the investigating officers.

Any person with any information which may be relevant to the Garda investigation should contact Roxboro Road Garda Station on 061 214 340, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.

A statement released this morning by An Garda Siochana confirmed: “Gardaí are investigating all the circumstances surrounding the fatal assault of a man that occurred at Parnell Street, Limerick, yesterday evening, Friday 15th April 2022.

“Gardaí attended the scene of the incident at approximately 10:25pm. A man, aged in his 40s, was discovered with serious injuries. He was removed from the scene to University Hospital Limerick to be treated before he later passed.

“The scene is currently preserved to allow for a technical examination to take place. The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem will be conducted later today.

“Gardaí in Roxboro Road are appealing to any person who may have information in relation to this incident to contact them.

“No arrests have been made at this stage, investigations are ongoing.”
