Gardaí investigating claims an alleged spree killer has come to Ireland – to claim asylum

Gardaí have launched a probe into claims an alleged spree killer has come to Ireland to claim asylum.

Sources have told this paper the investigation began earlier this week after media reports in Zimbabwe said Peter Dube, who is the subject of an Interpol manhunt, fled here under a false name.

Reports claimed Dube, who is alleged to have murdered three people in Zimbabwe just over two years ago, was staying at a facility in west Dublin.

But a source said: “We are happy he is not at the facility named in the media and we have found zero evidence that he is here at all. Inquiries are continuing, but at this stage there is nothing to suggest he is in Ireland.”

It’s understood gardai are now using Interpol to ask for more details from Zimbabwe police.

A senior Zimbabwean cop told media outlets there last week that officers had established Dube (37) was in Ireland – and they had put out an Interpol Red Notice on him.

A source said: “The Interpol Red Notice does not confer any powers of arrest. All we can do if we find him here is notify authorities in Zimbabwe and then it will be up to them to ask Ireland to arrest him and send him back.”

Car dealer Dube’s second wife Nyasha Nharingo and her suspected lover Shelton Chinhango were shot dead in Gweru in April 2021. Nyasha’s friend Gamuchirai Mudungwe was also shot dead in the incident.
