Gardaí in Mullingar say they are investigating all of the possible circumstances after the deaths of an infant and a child in a fatal car fire in Westmeath on Friday, September 9, 2022.
Emergency services and gardai rushed to the scene at around 4 pm on Friday, after the alarm was raised that a car with three occupants was on fire on a rural road at Lackan near Multyfarnham.
An infant boy was removed from the scene by ambulance to Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar where he was later pronounced dead.

The remains of a juvenile female were also discovered inside the car at the scene. Her remains have now been moved to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore.
An adult female was treated at the scene for burn injuries, and she was taken by air ambulance to a Dublin Hospital to be treated for her injuries - which are understood to be serious but not life-threatening.
The scene was examined on Friday evening by the Garda Technical Bureau and will remain preserved overnight. The car involved in the incident has been removed from the scene and will be forensically examined on Saturday.
The Coroner has been notified and the scene has been examined by the State Pathologist, Dr. Sally Ann Collis, who will carry out post-mortems on both deceased in the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore on Saturday.
In a statement released this evening, officers said” “The results of the Post Mortems and the Forensic examinations will determine the course of the investigation.
“An incident room has been established at Mullingar Garda Station and Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed to lead the investigation.
“A Garda family liaison officer has been appointed and An Garda Síochána will continue to support the family involved in conjunction with other state agencies.”
