Police said a false report of a child abduction led to a gang attack on an innocent man.
Merseyside Police today shared details of the attack on a man who was falsely identified on social media as being involved in a supposed abduction outside a shop on Lyneham, in Whiston on Tuesday. They said the man was "detained" by members of the public in Rainhill on Wednesday afternoon before being attacked by a number of youths.
Today they issued a warning about the sharing of misinformation online, saying the man who was pictured in the widely-shared reports of the incident was wholly innocent. They also appealed for information as they vowed to hold those involved in the attack on the innocent man "accountable."
