The director of Florida's gambling addiction helpline has been jailed for nearly 10 years for stealing $1.4 million (£1,056,440) from his employer to fund his own betting habit, in a case whose irony has triggered viral disbelief across social media.

Online users quickly seized on the contradiction of his role, with one top-voted comment on X (formerly Twitter) highlighting the reality of the case: 'The guy who was suppose to help actually needed help.'
