Galvin Green is renowned for producing some of the best rain gear and now the brand has introduced a collection for men and women featuring new technology called PERTEX Shield Stretch, designed to exceed expectations - lighter and stretchier than ever before. I was therefore keen to find out if this was the case.
This rain jacket comes in two color options, and I have to say, the overall styling is fairly similar to Galvin Green’s Ally waterproof jacket that I reviewed last season in this colorway - it’s predominantly navy with white side panels, and white also highlights underneath the shoulders for a streamlined effect. I like the smart, clean cut styling because it has minimal fuss, what's important is that it does its job properly.
There are a few subtle design differences between the Ally and the new Amy model that are an improvement. That includes the zipped side pockets, which are nicely concealed for extra protection, and it does have a very silky smooth lining, which made it easy for me to put on and take off over the sweater I was wearing.
The sleeves are very roomy, so there’s plenty of freedom when you swing a club. I really like the adjustable cuffs as I could tighten them to secure the fit, not only to make it more comfortable when playing shots, but it also helped to keep the rain out. Similarly, I used the elastic drawstring at the hem to create a tighter and more shapely fit.
As for performance, I played in rain, albeit not torrential, and this jacket kept me completely dry. It is very lightweight and simple to fold up and pack in your golf bag when not in use. If I had to make a a criticism, which is probably unjustified because it did not put me off my shots, is that the fabric is slightly noisy, which is similar to other waterproofs on the market.
With regard to the new PERTEX Shield Stretch Technology - yes, the fabric is noticeably stretchy, which only adds to this jacket’s overall comfort, but I also found the Ally jacket to be equally so, therefore I would say that stretchiness is a quality in both these models.
Galvin Green know what they are doing when it comes to designing rain gear. The Amy jacket is top of the range, but for guaranteed comfort and 100% waterproof and wind protection, it's a worthwhile investment. For more weather protection, check out our buying guides on the best women's golf clothes.
