Gabriel Dossen has won gold for Ireland after defeating Lewis Richardson by unanimous decision in this evenings European Championship final.
Dossen, who competes in the middleweight division, controlled the contest from start to finish with his footwork and agility, and fully deserves to be coming home with a gold medal wrapped around his neck.
The Southpaw Dossen started the first round patiently, looking to pick apart Richardson with his jab. The Englishman connected with a decent flurry midway through the round that seemed to stun Dossen momentarily. Dossen recovered, however, and took the round on all of the judges scorecards.
Richardson tried to push the pace in round two, but Dossen was too skillful and too elusive. The Irishman managed to stay out of his opponents range and picked his shots nicely.
It was all still to play for heading into the third and final round as Richardson was awarded the second round by a couple of the five judges.
Both men put it all on the line in round number three. Again, Dossen was too fast and too slick, picking up the victory by unanimous decision, with all five judges scoring the contest 29-28 in favour of Dossen.
The 22 year old, who fights out of Olympic BC Galway, has done the country proud with his performance today. With victory, Dossen joins an illustrious list of Irish men and women to win European gold.
