GAAGO looks set to continue in 2024 despite controversy

GAAGO looks set to continue in 2024 despite fury from fans over having to pay to watch big Championship games.

While many welcome the streaming of certain matches that would usually not be televised live, supporters were furious that Saturday's two All-Ireland quarter-final clashes were shown exclusively on GAAGO.

Only one of defending All-Ireland champions Kerry's Championship matches so far this year have been shown on terrestrial TV.

Their All-Ireland quarter-final clash with Tyrone on Saturday afternoon, as well as the evening meeting of Monaghan and Armagh, were only available to view on GAAGO for a cost of €12 each.

All the remaining football and hurling championship games this year will be shown live on RTE, but GAAGO looks likely to return next season.

Speaking towards the end of Saturday's broadcast, GAAGO presenter Grainne McElwain told viewers that herself and the panel would be talking to them again in 2024.

She said: "Goodbye. That's it. Thanks to Marc (O Se), Paddy (Andrews), Michael (Murphy) and Aaron (Kernan), for their company today.

"Thanks to all our pundits and analysists who have been with us over the season. We have had an absolute ball. Thanks so much for watching. (Thanks to) all the team behind the camera here who do so much to make us all look so good here in front of the camera.

"So hope you've enjoyed watching. We'll be talking to you next season, but from all of us here until next time, Slan and take care."

A number of fans took to social media over the weekend to blast the decision to put Saturday's games behind a paywall.

One tweeted: "It’s a disgrace. I can understand if there are clashes in match schedules but there was nothing even on RTÉ on Saturday. Something seriously needs to be done. This can’t just be accepted as the norm from now on."

Someone else said: "How are the #GAA getting away with not televising All Ireland Quarter Finals for free in Ireland?"

Another person commented: "GAAGO is a horrible greedy concept alienating a lot of people from enjoying the national sport of Ireland.
