GAA fans all making the same comparison between Masters leader Scottie Scheffler and Michael Murphy

This is one of the busiest sports weekends for couch potatoes as Irish fans are happily taking in overseas action at Augusta, Aintree as well as The Etihad.

However, some supporters had GAA on the brain as they couldn't help but point out a striking similarity between Masters leader Scottie Scheffler and Donegal ace Michael Murphy.

Virgin Media presenter and Donegal native Tommy Matrin was among them as he tweeted: "Finding it hard to root against Scottie Scheffler because he looks a bit like Michael Murphy."

Similarly, Andrew said: "Scottie Scheffler has a Michael Murphy head about him."

Damian joked: "Little known fact about Scottie Scheffler, he's actually the son of Michael Murphy and Desperate Dan."

While Paul shared a side-by-side of them while commenting: "Has anyone ever seen Scottie Scheffler and Michael Murphy in the same room?"

There has been plenty of genuine Irish involvement at the top of the leaderboard to make staying up late worth it as Shane Lowry sits in a tie for fourth place going into Sunday.

He sits seven shots off Scheffler at -2 as a frustrating back nine last night looks to have put pay to any hopes of a magical major win to go along with his 2019 Open success.

Lowry picked up where he left off at the end of his second round and was two-under (-5 for the tournament) through six holes of his third round.

But he bogeyed the par-four ninth hole and added another bogey on the 13th after a poor approach shot, with TV microphones picking up a foul-mouthed outburst from Lowry after he overshot the pin.

The Offaly man cut a frustrated figure after another bogey on 17 and spoke of his frustration when interviewed after the round.

Cameron Smith is Scheffler's closest challenger and the Australian sits in second place at -6 after carding an impressive 68 in high winds.

Lowry's playing partner, South Korean Sungjae Im, is third in the leaderboard at -4.

Rory McIlroy will be hoping to land a top-10 finish with a strong showing later today.

The four-time major champion is tied for ninth position at +1 after a one-under-par 71 in his third round.

Tiger Woods, meanwhile, again looked to be struggling physically and shot a six-over 78 after a poor putting display, which included a four-putt double-bogey on the fifth green.
