Furious mum-to-be's 'disgust' after doctor reveals sex of baby against her wishes

An expectant mum was left disappointed after her baby's sex was revealed during a scan despite her stating she wanted a surprise.

The 27-week pregnant mum took to Mumsnet to share her frustration after the incident during an ultrasound without her husband present and against her wishes.

In the post, she said that the eager parents-to-be had wanted to keep the sex of the baby a surprise and had told the two assistants of their wishes after suffering two miscarriages.

The poster had been suffering some upper abdominal pains so had gone into hospital to be checked over where she had an ultrasound to check her gallbladder and appendix.

During the scan she had told the two assistants they wanted to keep the sex of the baby a surprise until the birth after having two miscarriages so when the doctor was scanning her she looked away.

She posted: "She assured me all was okay with the heartbeat.

"She got close to the legs so I instantly looked away.

"The next minute she announced the sex of my baby...I was absolutely shellshocked as I desperately didn't want to know, especially in those circumstances without my husband."

She said the assistants were mortified and reported the senior sonographer but added: "Although that doesn't give me any comfort as she's spoilt the surprise for me.

"I just feel really disgusted by the situation."

In the comments, people were quick to point out that as long as the baby was healthy surely that's what was most important.

One said: "Whilst disappointing it's not really something to get so worked up over.

"You know the sex of your baby, you'd have found out in 12 weeks anyway.

"Sleep on it for a few days before doing anything else."

Another commented: "I totally sympathise and it does sound like they purposefully told you.

"But, speaking as someone who didn't find out with one of theirs, every scan I had, I told the sonographer as soon as I saw them I didn't want to know the sex.

"I would complain formally too if I were you."
